Most commercial manufactures provide you with standard designs, diameters and weights of bullets in a given calibre because it is the only way to produce them economically.

How do you know that your favourite .38/357, for example, performs best with a 148grn wadcutter in .357 diameter, as opposed to a 149, 150, 151 grain, etc. in .358? Or your favourite .222 Rem with a 50 grain bullet in 6S as opposed to a 52 or 53 grain bullet in 6S or 8S?

The Point Is You Do NOT Know!

These are to a large extent arbitrary weights and designs offered by commercial bullet manufacturers for many reasons. Not all of them are related to performance. Some weights and designs came about, simply, because they fitted or could be made to fit nicely into a jacket, which was readily available at a given time.p

If your idea can be made to produce sufficient turnover, any design can be contemplated within reason. The size of turnover may be much smaller than you think.
