The Humble Ball:
The ball projectile is of a fixed diameter and a fixed weight. It should be possible, therefore in theory, for a "perfect" ball to perform extremely accurately when shot at its rather limited energy levels through both rifled and smoothbore barrelled weapons. To a large extent the veracity of this hypothesis is witnessed at shooting competitions, quite regularly! Advocates for breech-loading cartridge weapons often surprise themselves with the accuracy potential of our "humble" ball.

The performance of a perfect ball has been alluded to above. In practice, it is extremely difficult and time consuming to achieve a truly spherical projectile from lead. For a ball projectile to fly true and perform consistently, irrespective of the way it is loaded in the chamber of a revolver/gun, it must be made so that its centre of shape coincide with its centre of mass and as near to perfection as possible. This means that the diameter of all circular planes crossing its centre of shape must be equal.
